Posted: 6 Dec 2005 19:35:18 With so many DIVs in the templates of this upgrade (2.01), Mac IE does not display the index page correctly; DIVs are overlapping. The templates have too many DIVs making it just about impossible to do any real customization of a site. I am still trying to figure out how to keep my site with the same look I had, therefore I have not been able to update to 2.01 yet. The 1.0v templates were easier to customize, but now with the overuse of DIVs I don't think it will be practical anymore. Basic components like the search and user log-in components should have been left nested within a simple table. Now there is a convoluted series of DIVs that break apart with the slightest CSS changes. If I am stuck having to use the standard dotSilver themes, than what is the point of having any partners at all. Every partner site will look exactly the same excluding the name. If I can't get this figured out soon, I may be parting ways. |

Posted: 6 Dec 2005 22:55:20 Hi raybman, all experienced search engine optimizators are writing their sites using DIVs now. I agree, it is a little bit intricate than the tables, but it is more usable. Once you have understood the system of it's construction, you'll be able to make differences much easier than in tables. Draw attention, that all our layouts have the same code except few distinctions. And if you'll know how to change something in one layout it means that you'll know how to make changes in all the rest. A little bit more patience and you'll do it. It is not a rocket science. |

Posted: 7 Dec 2005 00:36:40 - Edited by: raybman Well, something is wrong when Mac IE is breaking apart the index page of the site you are using as an example, and that's before I have made any changes to the template. Look at this site through a Mac: http://www.telonica.com/dating/ Proper SEO starts with pages that validate, the CSS and templates do not. I have been spending a lot of time trying to get the pages to validate. My previous site, version 1.0, went through numerous corrections to get the pages "closer" validating. |

Posted: 7 Dec 2005 02:59:32 Thank you for noting that. We surely had code validation in plans, and 2.0.2 update for layouts being prepared right now will HTML/CSS code validated. We can test before the release, if the site looks proper on Macs. |

I would be sorry to see him parting ways. I hope the issues he brings up will be giving serious consideration. I certainly don’t have the experience that most of you probably have but I have done a lot of research and experimenting with various CMS’s and after exploring dating_silver 2.02 inside out, I am almost completely at lost as far as finding how and where to personalize my site. I am willing to put great effort into making my venture a success and supporting the team but I am not sure I can find the time to teach myself PHP, smarty and div’s. The package is great and obviously great efforts went into its creation. I guess I would have hoped for a friendlier and more versatile admin panel. Nevertheless I will continue to try and figure it out and give it my best shot. |

Posted: 13 Jan 2006 18:57:05 - Edited by: Rui I agree with Raybman that the DIV's a pain in the a** For all the DIVs that are not bordered, try to throw a temporary border on them. e.g. border:1px solid red; This helps me get visually situated by having a margin in the work area. Note: I might add that by changing the border colors I discovered divisions nested within divisions that in most cases are not physically close to each other in the CSS sheet. This makes you go back and forth having to look for something about a mile away from the focus of the work, which would never happen in a table. In some cases nesting of the DIVs seems to serve no purpose whatsoever. Don't want to seem negative, as there very nice improvements in this version. But this design is extremely complex to modify and I think that, at a minimum, the index page should be simplified. |
