Posted: 19 Jan 2007 13:26:03 - Edited by: jorge68 This is what I believe to be a DEFINITE scam. I am CONVINCED of it, & I thought it'd be interesting to share with others. I recently registered to a fairly new Australian free dating site, & replied to a profile of a very attractive young lady in her 20's, said to be from Western Australia. She replied back the same day, & sent her Yahoo IM user ID. I added it to my contacts. It wasn't until 2 days later I first chatted with her. In the meantime I tried viewing her profile on the site again, & it'd been removed. When I first saw her online on Yahoo, we chatted very briefly. She couldnt recall my message, & said she was no longer on the site, or searching, but could keep contact as a friend. Her English was so good, both spelling & grammar, that she sounded like someone Australian. I then exchanged some emails with her, where she said she removed her profile on the site due to 'Australia being too far from where she lived', & that she was from Ft Lauderdale, Florida!! She warmed up & seemed quite keen. The next time I chatted with her, it was a longer conversation, where she told me about her life. GET THIS....She was born of an American father (who died when she was only 3), & an African mother. Her mother raised her & eventually sent her to college at Florida State University, where she recently graduated in Accounting. Her mother passed on not long ago, & having 'no one else in the US', she travelled to Nigeria(!!), to visit her grandmother, & stay with her a while, where she is at now. She is now living a poor life there, & cannot find a job. During this conversation, she expressed much interest in continuing contact, but her internet connection was about to be cut, as she couldn't pay the bill. She stated it was her only means of contact, & asked if I could send money to pay the bill (for $200!!!!). Of course I am not sending money to a stranger, but I thought it was still worth sharing on here. I mean COME ON, why would a very attractive white/caucasian American woman (she took 'Dad's complexion') leave the US after graduating college to go to Nigeria to live a poor, disadvantaged life, only because she suddenly was alone in the US?? I even tried quizzing this person about Florida State University, & asked her who the football team there is, & she said it was the GATORS, when I'm sure its the SEMINOLES! And I'm from Australia & I know that. I'd like to hear others' thoughts. I also must credit this site for alerting me to yet more ways that Nigerian Scammers operate. Even though I didn't buy this scam, I was unaware that internet bills was another way they seek money, until I saw this site. Thanks! |
